Continuous Strapless Heart Rate Monitor

I find the word ‘continuous’ gets bandied around a lot when it comes to discussions on heart rate monitors. So what exactly is it and do you really need a continuous strapless heart rate monitor?

Well, to put it simply, all heart rate monitors with chest-straps are continuous. This means that they are always able to determine the heart rate because the chest strap is wrapped around your body and able to detect the heart’s electrical activity at all times.

Conversely, if you do away with the chest strap and use a strapless device instead, you no longer are able to determine heart rate continuously. Rather, heart rate is determined ‘on demand’ generally by placing two fingers onto the strapless HRM watch’s metallic sensors.

Alternatively, you may like to check out the ePulse2 strapless HRM which does not require a chest strap yet returns continuous data. It works by reading your pulse rather than electrical activity and therefore does not require you to place any fingers on the watch. The reason continous data is useful is because you get a full data profile of your exercise workout which really smart heart rate monitor watches can process to reveal a full plethora of analytical and statistical information. What’s more, you can even load the data up onto your PC to track your entire exercise regime over time.

Now clearly, many of us don’t actually need that much detail on our workouts and are therefore willing to make the trade-off between the comfort of no chest-strap and the requirement to place the fingers on the HRM face ‘on-demand’ every now and then in order to get a heart rate reading. In fact if you do this often during your workout, a strapless heart rate monitor watch is also able to give a reasonably good estimate as to your average heart rate throughout the period of an activity.

But if you are a serious athlete or engaged in an activity where placing fingers on the other wrist is inconvenient, such as cycling, then chest strap is the way to go as real-time data is the best way to ensure that you are always in the training zone you need to be in.
